Slope Drawings
Included in the exhibition were three slope drawings, three large hand-cut photographs, one transfer drawing, images of property markers, and a video made while walking the perimeter of the forest.
2010
In my paintings and drawings I splice and reorder the traditional horizontal landscape to make relationships between organisms more visible and to make manifest the energy and entropy constantly at work in the woods. The paintings and collages are based on an earlier series of Slope Drawings, a mash-up of the organic shapes and textures I observed while cutting my photographs. The circuitous composition of these works emphasize the relationship between parts, rather than a unified whole. The Slope Drawings have no clear orientation; I rotate the image while working on the drawing, in order to give a sense of being immersed in this shifting and evolving woods.
